Man’s Best Friend

Posted on 2020-12-252021-10-29

Many people enjoy the companionship of a dog. They are loyal, trusting, loving and lots of fun. But did you know that canine pets can impact human health as well? A recent study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes found that owning a dog can bring more than just companionship. There are actual physical health benefits. This was specifically seen in heart attack and stroke survivors that lived alone. Owning a dog was associated with 33 % lower risk for early death among heart attack survivors and 27% reduced risk of early death for stroke survivors compared to those not having a dog. The researchers don’t understand all of the reasons for this association, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying the companionship and health benefits of having a dog!

Note: Of course, before getting a dog yourself or for someone else make sure that the dog can be well cared for.
