The word is out. The World Health Organization’s agency for research on cancer has classified processed meats as carcinogens, cancer causing agents, and red meats as probable carcinogens. Processed meats include foods like bacon, hot dogs, sausage and ham, while red meats include beef, pork, lamb and goat. With this information on the table, the recommendation is to avoid processed meats and cut down on red meats. But what do we fill our plates with when we remove the meat? As colorectal cancer is the one of the chief cancers implicated in this report, increasing dietary fiber found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans will go a long way in keeping cancer at bay.
